The Four Horsemen is the second track off Metallica's debut album, Kill 'Em All. It is based on the older song The Mechanix. For The Four Horsemen, James Hetfield rewrote the lyrics and Kirk Hammett added a solo in the middle. The Four Horsemen was originally written by Dave Mustaine in his former band Panic entitled The Mechanix. The song was one of Metallica's staples during their clubbing days, albeit with no melodic interlude and different lyrics. The original lyrics were roughly about. It was re-issued by Nuclear Blast Records in 2003 with a slightly different track listing. The album title is in reference to The Four Horsemen from Kill 'Em All and contains covers of songs by Metallica from Kill 'Em All to ReLoad, but omits Load. The original song, called The Mechanix, had different lyrics, and was written by Mustaine during the time when he was in his previous band Panic. After Mustaine was ejected from Metallica, he included it on Megadeth's first album, Killing Is My Business And Business Is Good, with the title slightly shortened to just Mechanix, with the original lyrics, and at a much faster tempo. After he left, Hetfield rewrote the lyrics and Hammett added a new, melodic guitar solo in the middle of t read more. For Metallica, The Four Horsemen could refer to the four members of the band. A group called Gamma led by Ronnie Montrose has a song called Four Horsemen that Mustaine played in his pre-Metallica band, Panic. He would refer to Metallica as The Four Horsemen and suggested they cover the Gamma song. The band never did the cover, but they did appropriate the title.
