The Symphony No. 4 in A major, Op. 90, commonly known as the Italian, is an orchestral symphony written by German composer Felix Mendelssohn. The work has its origins as had the composer's Scottish 3rd Symphony and The Hebrides overture in the tour of Europe which occupied Mendelssohn from 1829 to 1831. Its inspiration is the colour and atmosphere of Italy, where Mendelssohn made sketches but left the work incomplete. Below is a snippet of a letter he wrote to his father: . On one level, however, the Italian Symphony is not particularly Italian. Not for Mendelssohn the continuous use of local folk songs or musical traditions instead, the work is much more an expression of how Italy made him feel. Indeed, its not until the final movement some twenty minutes into the symphony that we first hear a genuinely Italian music motif, in this case the sound of a national peasant dance. The Bizet Symphony is very attractive also, but despite the addition of English oboe soloist, David Theodore, for the long oboe solo in the Adagio, the performance is not quite as good as the Mendelssohn - for Stokowski at his very best in Bizet you must hear his recording of the Bizet Carmen music.
