He and partner Robert Forster formed the band in 1978 and continued off and on through 2005. McLennan's solo career began with Watershed in 1991 he released a total of four albums, the last in 1997, then rejoined Forster for a reunion. The lead song from Grant McLennan's second album Fireboy, Lighting Fires is the Australian musician at his most focused and fiery. What that means in practical terms isn't speakers being blown out or the ghost of John Bonham on drums, but it does mean that McLennan's wonderful voice gets just a touch ragged but attractively so as he sings, while the sharp, punchy rhythm and dramatic piano parts match the lyrical intensities of the song just so. Intermission is a two-CD compilation album by Robert Forster and Grant McLennan, bandmates in The Go-Betweens, of material recorded for their solo albums through the 1990s.
