Philip Kunia Pahinui Hawaiian pronunciation: April 22, 1921 October 13, 1980 was a slack-key guitarist and singer of Hawaiian music. Born into a struggling family, Gabby was born Charles Kapono Kahahawai Jr. and later hānaied with his brother and one of his sisters to Philip and Emily Pahinui and raised in the impoverished district of Kaka'ako in Honolulu in the 1920s all tin roofs and kinda falling apart. He spent his childhood supporting his family by selling newspapers and. Martin, the youngest son of the late Gabby Pops Pahinui, inherited his golden, yet savory voice from his father. Martin recorded with the Peter Moon Band for many years, and his lead vocals on the giant hits Flying and Cane Fire makes his voice recognizable to everyone in Hawai'i. He then joined his brothers Bla and Cyril, legacies in their own right, to record the album The Pahinui Brothe. Cyril Pahinui, a nationally recognized Hawaiian guitarist and singer who preserved and extended the tradition of slack-key guitar, died on Nov. 17 in Honolulu. He was 68. Guitarists like Mr. Pahinui also accompanied their own singing, using the sweetly sustained tone, wide vibrato and rich falsetto of Hawaiian tradition. Cyril Pahinui was born on April 21, 1950, in Oahu to Emily Pulepule and Philip Kunia Pahinui. He grew up in the rural village of Waimanalo.
