It can be hard to hear the guitarist Mark McGuire's contribution to his trio Emeralds, at times, but it's there, beneath the squalls of analog synths, bubbling like a clear, mountain spring. His solo work is more guitar-centric, multi-tracking arpeggiated pings and adding teasing layers of delay and effects it's also more melodic than Emeralds' drone-based work, with unabashedly lyric leads and heartstring-tugging changes. Living with Yourself-his debut for eMego, also a home to Emeralds-feels like his most satisfying and consistent material to date, one that mirrors the growth found in Emeralds with Does It Look Like I'm Here earlier this year. Putting aside the more literal story told via its tapes and title, Living with Yourself is also bound by a consistent sonic arc that finds McGuire shearing some of the more experimental elements of his work and focusing on what are really, perhaps for the first time in his solo career, very clearly songs more than sun-dazed wanderings. Focusing on his family, early friendships and the problems that inevitably develop through years of knowing someone, it takes McGuires sound even further out, and contains some his most accomplished songs to date.
