It's a bit strange to say it, and Mark Matos might not want to be burdened with the comparison, but there's something about Words of the Knife which suggests an alternate future for Beck sometime after 1998 or so. Tucson flavored pop songs meld with the sun baked chords and beats of 70s tropicalia and sleepwalk through mirrored and smoky 1970s rock venues. See contact information and details about Os Beaches. MM & OB's well received 2009 debut, Words Of The Knife, drew comparisons to Beck All Music Guide, John Steinbeck's California regionalism Crawdaddy, and Howe Gelb Present Magazine. Featuring contributions from members of Girls, The Blank Tapes, and Jolie Holland's band, the album inspired the LA Weekly to proclaim Mark Matos & Os Beaches re-invent Western Exotica. Mark Matos formerly of Campo Bravo emerged broken, bitten and naked out of the rabbit hole, after long travels by foot and mind, and found his way back home to San Francisco.
