"Bloom" is a hodge podge that just does not gel well together. MGK trades double-time flows for the likes of auto-tune harmonizing, favoring country/blues style guitars over booming 808s. I had a bad feeling when I heard "The Break Up Song" single, and when I finally stopped avoiding this album like the plague, I discovered that my prejudgments were a reality.
The only standout on this record is "Can't Walk", and that sounds like something Mixtape Weezy would have done back when I was in high school. "Golden God" was cool too, but ... the record made MGK sound immature bitching about his parents in one bar, as opposed to any of his more lengthy tracks on his family on his past releases.
By the way where was the stories on this? Where was the lens into his life? This album is more surface level than a poorly pressed vinyl.
Another big issue was the guests Gunna put on this. For example, "Trap Paris" - he did the ad-libs and the best verse on the song, why have the Migos? What, for a name check? Plus if MGK is crooning (trying hard) over this whole thing why even include Cabello, Arthur, or Steinfeld? I could have taken his singing more seriously if he would have wen't at it on his own, like XXX or Yelawolf but no, MGK took the coward's way out by primarily using auto-tune and guest features.
"Bloom" is a definite pass, and I do not know how this got past Diddy's desk. That last track should not even exist, the legends on "27" can have their homage paid somewhere else; anywhere but on "Bloom".
Honestly "Bloom" feels like a demo of throwaways in comparison with it's predecessors. A pity, three albums in, and still MGK has yet to find his voice in hip-hop.
