He was best known for the compositions he penned for the film Black Orpheus. Luiz Floriano Bonfá was born on October 17, 1922, in Rio de Janeiro. He studied in Rio with Uruguayan classical guitarist Isaías Sávio from the age of 11. These weekly lessons entailed a long, harsh commute by train 2 12 hours one way and on foot from his family home in Santa Cruz, the western rural outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. While classically trained, Brazilian guitarist Luiz Bonfa became one of the prime movers of bossa nova, recording with Antonio Carlos Jobim and Stan Getz, and composing many bossa nova standards, including the classic Manha Da Carnaval from ORFEU NEGRO. Recorded in 1972 in New York, when Luiz Bonfá 1922-2001 was part of north american RCA, Introspection is one of the masterpieces in the wide discography of the brazilian guitarist and composer, a genius that anticipated the bossa nova genre and later transcended it. Luiz Bonfá, along with Antonio Carlos Jobim, Baden Powell and Joao Gilberto, helped invent Brazilian Bossa Nova. The whisper heard around the world was budding during the 1950s but achieved full flower a decade later. It was a coolly intellectual yet irresistibly melodic marriage of African-derived samba rhythms with American jazz and French Existentialism.
