Beethoven: Piano Concertos. In every way that matters, this set of the Beethoven piano concertos with Leon Fleischer, George Szell, and the Cleveland Orchestra from the late '50s and early '60s is the first great American cycle of the concertos. Fleischer is a brilliant pianist with a hard-muscled tone, an athletic technique, and a fluent sense of tempo. His interpretations are more Classical then Romantic, more objective than subjective, more acting than being but the obvious joy Fleischer feels in his own prowess makes his playing endlessly enjoyable. Leon Fleisher recorded all the Beethoven piano concertos with George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra from 1959 until 1961. Daniel Barenboim recorded all five piano concertos and the Choral Fantasia with Otto Klemperer and the New Philharmonia Orchestra in 1968. Maurizio Pollini recorded the five piano concertos twice for Deutsche Grammophon. First with Karl Böhm and Eugen Jochum in the first two concertos and the Vienna Philharmonic and later with Claudio Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic. Sony originally released cds back in the 1990's, they had all 5 piano concertos by Szell, Cleveland, Fleisher, combined with the tripple concerto Ormandy, Rose Stern, Philadelphia, but those discs are out of print.
