María de la Luz Tena Álvarez was born in Durango, Mexico in 1938. As a former member of the company of Carmen Amaya this exceptional bailaora moved to Spain in 1958. It is well known that the instrument has a long history, derived from the crotales of the ancient world. It has come to have a particular place in Spanish dance, whether popular or classical. It has rested with Lucero Tena to achieve this, with her rhythmic sensibility, balance of the varied possible sonorities, and unique mastery of the instrument.
