The Blue Mask is the eleventh solo studio album by American musician Lou Reed. It was the first album released after Reed had left Arista Records and returned to RCA Records. The album was released around Reed's 40th birthday, and covers topics of marriage and settling down, alongside themes of violence, paranoia, and alcoholism. Reed and Robert Quine's guitars were mixed separately in the right and left stereo channels respectively. To differentiate his guitar's sound from Reed's, Quine used D tuning. Reed was also playing electric guitar again, and with the edgy genius he summoned up on White LightWhite Heat. Its content was inspired heavily by his newfound marriage to Sylvia Morales and his recent path to sobriety. The Blue Mask is often cited as one of Reeds best solo efforts, both for its lyrical content and its backing band. Comprised of guitarist Robert Quine of The Voidoids, bassist Fernando Saunders, and drummer Doane Perry, its considered by many as the best lineup Reed had worked with since the dissolution of The Velvet Underground.
