Short intro
This superb collection of works by 20th century minimalist composers spotlights works written for string orchestra. It opens with John Adams' Shaker Loops, a piece with strings set on rapid tremolo throughout - creating a beautiful, shimmering quality counterbalanced by an aggressive scrubbing sound. The London Chamber Orchestra LCO is the longest established professional chamber orchestra in the United Kingdom. Based in London, LCO has a residency at Cadogan Hall in Sloane Square and regularly tours Asia, the UK, Europe and the United States. The London Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1921 by the English conductor, organist, pianist and composer Anthony Bernard. He conducted the LCO's first performance, in the salon of No. 4 St. James's Square on 11 May 1921. Royal connection. Minimalist: Philip Glass, John Adams, Steve Reich, Dave Heath. Music by John Adams, Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Dave Heath London Chamber Orchestra Christopher Warren-Green, director. During the late 1960s, after Reich had returned to New York from San Francisco and Glass had come back from Paris, the two composers would often come together to discuss music and play in each others ensembles, but in time they went their separate ways. NOTES ABOUT Steve Reich Steve Reich read music at the Juilliard School in New York and later studied with Darius Milhaud and Luciano Berio. Adams offered all the repetitive energy that propelled Philip Glasss and Steve Reichs most popular scores, but his quicker harmonic development, sudden dynamic changes and other startling touches pointed toward the next step - emotional and dramatic - that this style needed to take. Adamss later orchestration gave the work a graceful sheen, but the original chamber recording has an endearingly homespun quality. The companion piece, Light Over Water 1983, is a pleasantly spacey oddity for brass and synthesizersRelated to London Chamber Orchestra - Adams / Glass / Reich / Heath - Minimalist
