The Hungarian Rhapsodies are staples of orchestral pop concerts and encores, but Scherchen approaches them as profound dramatic tone poems. Here, Scherchen is leading the Vienna State Opera Orchestra, which included mainly members of the Vienna Philharmonic, so there's not a lot of doubt about the quality of the music making, even though the Opera Orchestra doesn't sound as luxuriously polished as the Philharmonic, and intonation doesn't appear as solid. Who knows. LISZT, Hermann Scherchen, Vienna State Opera Orchestra. Hungarian Rhapsodies Nos. 1, 4, 5, Battle of the Huns. 1, 4, 5 Battle of the Huns. In Scherchens and the Vienna State Orchestras recording it is a delight to bask in the microcosm of Hungarian melodies which Franz Liszt brought together in his Rhapsodies and which he burnished with a symphonic gold patina with the help of Franz Doppler. Disdainful of all too obvious contrasts, Scherchen achieves a mildness which is nevertheless full of tension and excitement by fading in the themes as though with a dimmer. And that is not all .
