Janacek simplified his fiendishly difficult original score for the Glagolitic Mass when advised that mid-1920's orchestras would find it too taxing. Recently, the original has been reconstructed by scholar Paul Wingfield, and brought to life by the late Sir Charles Mackerras et. al. But here is a chance to revisit one of the best-known renditions of the 'classic' version that introduced many of us to this groundbreaking composer back in the sixties. Though in mono, it has oodles of charm and atmosphere, with performances by some of the cream of mid-twentieth-century Czech performers. Listen out for a young Jaroslav Vodrážka on the final organ 'Postludium', which had survived simplification and remains one of the best performances ever of this frenetic but satisfying organ solo.
