Don't let the extraterrestrial name fool you Leo's Sunshipp played funky soul music and would have been around much longer if tragedy hadn't struck. The band revolved around singers Kenny Stover, Johnny Simone, and Alvin Few all were born under the astrological sign of Leo, thus the name. R&BSoul 1978. Leos Sunshipp was a Los Angelesbased vocal trio operating on the periphery of the citys burgeoning late-70s soul scene. We Need Each Other went unfinished. Eventually, the album appeared on the tiny Lyons imprint, its runtime bolstered by instrumental versions of the four finished tracks. Had We Need Each Other been completed, its beautiful arrangements and delightfully laid-back optimism might have made it one of the era's best soul releases. Leos Sunshipp may have been huge, or they may have churned out a welter of albums to an increasingly uninterested audience. We will never know. Because of its circumstance and its unfinished nature, We Need Each Other remains an underground classic. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Licence. We Need Each Other by US funk & soul group Leos Sunshipp is a record that despite its absolute beauty has always struck me as mystery. The first thing that has always puzzled me is the odd cover art which would seem more à propos for a late 60s flower power psych folk record. Then you turn the the back of the record and you see the same 4 tracks on the A and B sides, but in a different order weird. The other members decided to stop production and the album was shelved until the label released what they had along with alternate versions. With these four absolutely amazing tracks, one can only imagine the career they might have had . We Need Each Other 1978.
