Leo Kottke's seventh album is a dazzling amalgam of sounds and styles - there's a surprising emphasis on vocal numbers here, beginning with Standing on the Outside and Power Failure a Procol Harum number, no less, that show him off singing with a full band in a light country-ish vein, followed by Venezuela, There You Go, a. The obvious attempt on Chewing Pine to sell Kottke as more of a mainstream artist and a sometime singer obviously didn't work, as this closed out his contract with Capitol Records apart from one subsequent compilation. Chewing Pine is the last album on the Capitol label by American guitarist Leo Kottke, released in 1975. It peaked at 114 on the Billboard Pop Albums charts. Power Failure was originally recorded by Procol Harum, a band Kottke toured with in Europe in the 1970s. It was re-issued on CD by BGO CD148 in 1992 and One Way Records 18461 in 1996. It is sometimes referred to as Did Kottke is the first album on the Chrysalis label by American guitarist Leo Kottke, released in 1976. It reached 107 on the Billboard Pop Albums charts. After six releases on Capitol, Kottke and his managerproducer Denny Bruce changed labels. Chewing Pine has some great moments including his version of Procol Harum's Power Failure and Wheels, a classic Kottke interpretation. But, the addition of other instruments such as piano along with Leo experimentation with electric guitar almost feel like filler. Of Leo's studio albums with other musicians, I'd recommend Ice Water. Morning is the Long Way Home is pure open road joy and Born to Be With You is an unexpected treat on the album. And of course, the legendary Pamela Brown graces this recording.
