Wiley's career made a resurgence in 1950 with the much admired ten-inch album Night in Manhattan. In 1954, she opened the first Newport Jazz Festival, accompanied by Bobby Hackett. The audio quality on this disc is crisp and clear, and while there is the occasional light crackle, it is absolutely listenable and satisfying. Running time is 34:17. Lee Wiley was the first jazz singer to record the works of Rodgers and Hart, in a short by today's standards album which here is fluffed with four solo piano pieces by Ellis Larkins. This combination is essentially a rip-off, as Larkins never plays with Wiley, but it's forgivable because both of the artists are wonderful. Wiley is at her best. Ellis Larkins & Lee Wiley.
