The work was written in 1874 for violinist Pablo Sarasate, and premiered in Paris on February 7, 1875. Although called a Spanish Symphony see also Sinfonia concertante, it is considered a violin concerto by musicians today. The piece has Spanish motifs throughout, and launched a period when Spanish-themed music came into vogue. Georges Bizet's opera Carmen premiered a month after the Symphonie espagnole. I have heard a good many records of the Symphonie Espagnole in my day for this journal seems to regard me as its resident reviewer of the work and I hope nobody expects me to listen to all the other ten versions all through again before saying that I am sure this new one is the winner. Szeryng is at least the equal of the best of the other virtuosi who have recorded it, both in style and in effortless technique, and gives an enchanting, as well as breathtaking, performance. But what makes me so sure of this record&a. Symphonie espagnole. Walter Hendl pianist, conductor and composer on 1959-02-28. recording of: Symphonie espagnole in D minor, op. This is a tremendous performance by Szeryng of the Symphonie Espagnole. It is much, much better than his later performance with the Monte Carlo Opera orchestra on Philips.
