Blackwell first came to national attention as the drummer with Ornette Coleman's quartet around 1960, when he took over for Billy Higgins in the quartet's stand at the Five Spot in New York City. He is known as one of the great innovators of the free jazz of the 1960s, fusing New Orleans and African rhythms with bebop. In the 1970s and 1980s Blackwell toured and recorded extensively with fellow Ornette Quartet veterans Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, and Dewey Redman in the quartet Old and New Dreams. Karl Berger is a master of the vibraphone, but he also touches balafon an African xylophone and darbuka on this recording. In addition to the drum kit, Edward Blackwell also plays osi, an African slit drum. Here, we journey back to 1976, when producer Martin Davidson recorded the vibraphonist and the great drummer Edward Blackwell for a series of duets which was originally released as an LP in 1979 for the Quark label. With this reissue, we find Berger performing on vibraphone, an African xylophone called a balafon and a darbuka goblet-shaped drum while the late Edward Blackwell utilized a full drum kit and an osi-drum.
