Short intro

Karel Velebný 17 March 1931, Prague - 7 March 1989, Prague was a Czech jazz musician, composer, arranger, actor, writer and music pedagogue. Velebný was one of the founders and pioneers of modern Czech jazz in the second half of the 20th century. At 7 years old, Velebný played piano and at 15 - already a modern jazz enthusiast - taught himself to play alto saxophone. He graduated from gymnasium then studied drumming at the Prague Conservatory. He made his first public performance as a student, and. Andulko Safarova In February, 1968, as the false Spring of hope was rising in occupied Czechoslovakia, ESP instructed Karl Velebny to record his group of improvisers during their upcoming tour of Germany. In April, 1968, the clandestine project was completed. Velebny shows how imagination and artistry make compact bedfellows. His discography is sketchy and his music is not easily available, which makes this CD one to treasure. Jerry D'Souza, All About Jazz. An early 1967 example of European free improvisation, Karel Velebney's SHQ on occasion feels a little tentative in comparison to full-on fearless explorations like the work of Peter Brötzmann or Fred Van Hove. Although there are several free passages, especially on the largely solo opener The Uhu Sleeps Only During the Day, the rhythm section of pianist Ludek Svabensky, bassist Karel Vejvoda, and drummer Josef Vejvoda largely sticks to basic post-bop rhythms that rein in Velebney's bass clarinet and tenor saxophone and Jirí Stivín's woodwinds. Czech jazz combo, founded by Karel Velebný and Jan Konopásek in 1961 after both musicians quit the Czechoslovak Radio Dance Orchestra. The group name is an abbreviation of Spejbl Hurvínek QuartetQuintet the Spejbl & Hurvínek Theatre in Prague was the groups original employer. The Parnas album from the early 80s reverted back to acoustic general jazz and is probably for that reason unnecessary.
