During a career that spanned 45 years, she attained international stardom as an actress in both musical and dramatic roles, as a recording artist, and on the concert stage. Respected for her versatility, she received an Academy Juvenile Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Special Tony Award, and was the first woman to win the Grammy Award for Album of the Year for her 1961 live recording Judy. Judy Garland's almost 30 years in the movie industry provide some of her brightest moments. And Judy Garland in Hollywood is a near-perfect retrospective of her classic vocals for The Wizard of Oz, For Me and My Gal, Meet Me in St. Louis, Easter Parade, and numerous other celluloid musical favorites. She swings on tunes like The Trolley Song from St. Louis, and on A Star Is Born's Gotta Have Me Go with You, she shows the vocal finesse and maturity of her later years. Of the 23 cuts, there's not a single dud, and the sound quality is excellent. Questioning the Story: Did Hollywood studios supply Judy Garland diet pills and speed to keep her skinny and working nonstop The Judy true story confirms that she never had any resemblance of a normal childhood. As seen in the movie, Hollywood studios like MGM encouraged her to take appetite suppressants, uppers, and downers to keep her thin and working productively. Her first feature film was an MGM musical comedy called Pigskin Parade. After execs saw her onscreen, they told her she looked like a fat little pig with pigtails. Garland will return to the big screen in 2019, this time portrayed by Renee Zellweger in the biopic Judy, adapted from the musical stage drama End of the Rainbow by Peter Quilter. Of this latest look at the celebrated, yet tortured life of the Hollywood icon, Zellweger has stated her intentions are to celebrate and adore in this work. Garland's entire life was plagued by illness. During the intervening years between Oz and her 1969 London shows, Garland had experienced soaring career highs and tragic personal lows. Judy Garland Facts. From her iconic role as Dorothy to her tragic death at 47, Judy Garland epitomized Hollywood drama.
