Short intro
MusicWeb review: J. Bach, Weimar Cantatas: The Purcell Quartet, Emma Kirkby, Michael Chance, Charles Daniels, at The Wigmore Hall, London, 20th May, 2007. Michael Chance, contreténor - Charles Daniels, ténor - Peter Harvey, basse - The Purcell Quartet & interprètes invités. Go Unlimited. The 4 cantatas performed on this disc were all composed in 1707-08,when Bach was in the first flush of youth, in his early 20's. He was writing cantatas for every Sunday service and at the same time was organist and choirmaster at a church in Muhlhausen. The cantata 'Christ lag in Todes Banden' Christ lay in death's strong bonds confronts death in youthful-eyed and -eared calm, although its basic key in E minor, for Bach,a penitential key and, indeed, his key of Crucifixion in the B minor mass. Four top English soloists - soprano Emma Kirkby, countertenor Michael Chance, tenor Charles Daniels, and bass Peter Harvey - plus the Purcell Quartet handle these varied chores well in general. Those who want to hear Kirkby pushed to her limits can do so in the Gloria Patri movement of the cantata Dixit Dominus Domino meo, BuxWV 17, and the other soloists except for Harvey also get their athletic moments. Chance plays a bit loose with the pitch but is highly expressive. In the vocal-ensemble cantatas this English group does especially well in structures that point back to the mid. Track : Emma Kirkby Counter-tenor: Michael Chance Tenor: Charles Daniels Bass: Peter Harvey Purcell Quartet: Catherine Mackintosh, Catherine Weiss Violins Richard Boothby Cello, Viola da gamba, Violone Robert Woolley Organ With: Rachel Beckett Recorder Marion Scott Recorder Anthony Robson Oboe Andrew Watts Bassoon Jane Rogers Viola Clare Salaman Viola. Bach: Early Cantatas Volume 2 - Weimar Cantatas. Cantatas BWV 12 , BWV 18 , BWV 61 , BWV 161. OVPP - No Choir, Purcell Quartet. Daniels and Chance sounded effortful in their arias: the phrase alle Pein, Wurd doch nur ein Kleines sein should not actually sound painful, but Peter Harveys contribution was solidly musical. Gleich wie der Regen und Schnee. Maybe a bout of silliness has just overcome the Wigmores programme-writers: I certainly hope so, and that such guff as I must also be a miracle-worker in the general notes will have a short lifespan. Bach, of course, is the miracle-worker, and the packed house went home happy despite a performance which often fell short of the ideal. Melanie Eskenazi. WEIMAR CANTATAS This is Volume 2 in our survey of Bach's Early Cantatas and the first devoted to cantatas written whilst Bach was employed at the court of Weimar 1708 - 17. The cantatas recorded here were written around 1714, 15 and were performed with one voice to a part, no chorus being available. The Purcell Quartet and friends - including a stellar cast of soloists Emma Kirkby, Charles Daniels, Michael Chance and Peter Harvey - recreate these original performing conditions which offer the advantage of clear vocal and instrumental lines.
