Short intro

Winter Wheat is the second solo album by John K. Samson, released on October 21, 2016, via ANTI-. It is his first album of new material since The Weakerthans went on hiatus in 2015. The album was produced by Samson's Weakerthans bandmate Jason Tait and Christine Fellows, and also features contributions from his Weakerthans bandmate Greg Smith. In an interview with The A. Club, Samson described the album as feeling in some ways like a new Weakerthans album rather than a solo project. Winter Wheat. John K. On his second solo effort, Winnipeg native John K. Samson builds on his long-tenured role as poet laureate of contemporary prairie culture. Former frontman of beloved Canadian indie rockers the Weakerthans, Samson's trademark tales of blue-collar Canadians and downtrodden, internet-age academics continue to collide on Winter Wheat, an appropriately titled collection of maudlin folk-rock tunes where hope is hibernating just below the soil. Requests Lyrics. John K Samson is, for my money, the finest lyricist of our time. As hyperbolic and divisive of an opening statement as that surely is, how many other contemporary songwriters have had their lyrics studied by English Literature undergraduates or spent a term mentoring music students at a major university. Although Winter Wheat is released under his own name, Samson had assistance from wife Christine Fellows and a couple of Weakerthans members, with the general feeling being that he wrote these songs with his full band in mind. If the circumstances behind the albums conception are slightly murky, its quality is immediately clear. Listen free to John K. Winter Wheat, a charming set of autumnal acoustic numbers, is a constant reminder that songwriting from the molecular level-from the inside looking out-can be about much more than trivial matters of the heart while still boasting a sense of universality. Samson possesses a thoughtful, literary, lyrical wit, but it never feels as if hes addressing the listener down the barrel of his nose
