John Campbell. Howlin' Mercy was the last of two recordings for Elektra, and is by far the heavier of the two. As displayed by its opening track, Ain't Afraid of Midnight, Campbell was a considerable slide guitarist who owed his skill to the bluesmen like Lightnin' Hopkins from his home state of Texas, Fred McDowell, and a few others. His first group was the Texas-based electric power trio, Junction. Campbell cut his first album titled Street Suite. Exclusive discount for Prime members. Sample this album Artist Sample. Not as dark and full of voodoo themes as I expected, but a powerful guitar player with a deep and brooding voice that is a welcome addition to the Nawlins wing of my blues library. I would not compare his voice to Howlin' Wolf but more to Omar Dykes & the Howlers, and the guitar playing on a couple of tunes also was reminiscent of that bandRelated to John Campbell - Howlin' Mercy
