Short intro

The term Number Pieces refers to a body of late compositions 40, or 41 if Seventeen was actually composed by John Cage. Each piece is named after the number of performers involved: for instance, Seven is a piece for seven performers, One9 read One Nine is the ninth work for one performer, and 1O1 is a piece for an orchestra of 101 musicians. The vast majority of these works were composed using Cage's time bracket technique: the score consists of short fragments. The Number Pieces 1 is a jazz related improvcomposition music album recording by JOHN CAGE released in 1995 on CD, LPVinyl andor cassette. With Cage's number pieces, the relative absence of composer's stipulations means that the sensitivity of the players is paramount, and on these mid-Nineties recordings, the Essential Music Ensemble is clearly operating at its empathic peak. The pieces are named for the number of players, who are given flexible time-brackets within which to perform each sound event. This recording is notable for including the very last piece written by Cage, Thirteen, in which deep horn tones and xylophone tend to dominate the reeds and strings more equable is &quo.
