Creed Taylor matched two of his most famous artists, Wes Montgomery and Jimmy Smith, on this session Montgomery's last for Verve, and the results are incendiary - a near-ideal meeting of yin and yang. Smith comes at your throat with his big attacks and blues runs while Montgomery responds with rounder, smoother octaves and single notes that still convey much heat. This is a very fine jazz album with beautiful interplay between Jimmy Smith on organ and Wes Montgomery on guitar. I only give it 4 stars because to me the more flamboyant Smith 'takes over' and is far more prominent than the more introspective Montgomery. Having said that, this is a very enjoyable album. Before CTI in the 70s, Creed Taylor was producing for Verve when he brought together Jimmy Smith and Wes Montgomery, artists he'd worked with before, only separately and backed them on several tracks with a big band, or at least, a large cast. I'm often drawn to collaborations, as the better ones yield fantastic and varied results. Jimmy Smith And Wes Montgomery The Dynamic Duo CD Condition: Used.
