By 1969, Jim Dale had gained renown for his appearances in the series of Carry On film comedies and for his stage work, including the musical The Wayward Way. He had also made his mark as a songwriter, penning the lyrics to the international pop hit Georgy Girl. All of this tended to obscure his early triumphs as a pop singer in 1957, he had nearly topped the British charts with Be My Girl, going on to record sporadically over the next five years before largely abandoning the field.
