Short intro
Everyday I Get Closer to the Light from Which I Came is the fourth studio album by the British post-metal band Jesu. It was released on 23 September 2013 via frontman Justin Broadrick's own record label, Avalanche Recordings. The album attributes influences from post-punk, dub and electronica. Its sound relies on a more sombre, darker mood than the outlet's previous album Ascension, which featured a shorter, more guitar-led approach during its production. Jesu's records have been either haunting and beautiful usually the EPs, or almost suffocatingly dull for all their glacial repetition the overly long albums. Everyday I Get Closer to the Light from Which I Came falls into the former category. Clocking in at five songs, Everyday I Get Closer is the skimpiest Jesu full-length to date not counting the single-cut, fifty-minute Infinity from 2009, which is neither EP fish nor album fowl. The tracks vary greatly in span, but beyond that theres not as much of a dynamic as on prior Jesu full-lengths. Granted, Jesu has long been one of those great, every-song-sounds-the-same kind of endeavors, although a deeper immersion in any given Jesu disc reveals rich degrees of emotional engagement and layers of textured ambience. On top of that, Broadrick has been turning into a stunning singer-so. Review Summary: On this evidence, the light which Jesu is attempting to get closer to doesn't seem that far away. If ever there was a musician who excelled at fusing hypnotic, mesmerising sounds with otherworldly, dream-like atmospheres, then it must surely be Justin Broadrick. The ambitiously titled Every day I get close to the light from which I came is jam-packed with ambitious energy and experimentation, but its not without its few flaws either. For one thing, the first two songs appear to take too much time to actually move from where they started, and strangely enough they arent the longest songs on the album either. There are great moments that fulfil expectations of Jesu as a dissolving whirlpool bath of glass shards, but these flashes don't carry the full weight of the album. Read full review. Jesu was the name of the last song on the final Godflesh release, Hymns, and Broadrick decided to adopt it as the name of his new project. The first release, the Heart Ache EP, was released in 2004 and featured Broadrick playing all of the instruments. It was followed in 2005 by the full-length self-titled LP, which featured the addition of bassist Diarmuid Dalton and drummer Ted Parsons, although not every song featu read more.
