Singersongwriter JD McPherson's 2010 debut album, Signs & Signifiers, is a rockin', bluesy, forward-thinking album that subtly breaks the conventions of most vintage rock projects. Produced and recorded with the retro expertise of bassistguitarist Jimmy Sutton, the album is a gold mine of '50s-inspired rock and R&B, with some rockabilly twang thrown in for maximum effect. That said, McPherson actually draws from a wide and eclectic array of influences including Son House, Charlie Feathers, the Wu-Tang Clan, and sundry blues and soul artists from Guitar Slim to Sam Cook. JD McPherson hears the retro tag a lot, and no wonder: Signs & Signifiers, his debut album premiering exclusively today on , rocks and rolls like its 1955. Listen a little closer, though, and its clear the album is not what McPherson calls a time-machine record. Sure, he and producer-bassist Jimmy Sutton drew from vintage R&B and early rock & roll on songs laced with boxy drums, thumping upright bass and slap-echo guitar. Steeped in the classic rock of his older brothers, McPherson, 35, started playing guitar at 13, learning every Led Zeppelin riff he could before discovering punk a few years later. Through his father, McPherson was also listening to old blues and, crucially, obscure Buddy Holly sides. His pop stuff is great, but his rockabilly stuff, the stuff that usually isnt played on the radio, that kind of scratched an itch for me, McPherson says. Album 2010 12 Songs. Blame it on good taste and memorable tunes. Sure, straight-up rockabilly worship emanates from the opening North Side Gal, which sounds like it was mixed at Sun Studio circa 1956. And the piano-pounding, sax-blasting closer Scandalous would make perfect sense piping from the speakers of an old low-riding Chevy Impala dig that vintage tube-amp guitar distortion. Jonathan David JD McPherson, born April 14, 1977, is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. He is known for a retro sound rooted in the rock and roll, rhythm and blues, and rockabilly music of the 1950s. McPherson grew up in rural southeastern Oklahoma, on a cattle ranch near the town of Talihina. His father was a farmer and ex-army while his mother was a church minister. He took up the guitar at age 13. In high school he played in a number of local punk rock bands and began writing his own songs. He has stated that he has never not been read more. Sutton agreed to produce McPherson's debut album: this became 2010's Signs and Signifiers. On 19 November 2012, Rolling Stone labelled McPherson an Artist to Watch in a 3 star out of 5 review of Signs and Signifiers after its wider release through Rounder Records.
