Recorded on July 28, 1966, before the band had cut any studio material, this performance was one of Janis Joplin's first gigs with Big Brother. The sound is decent, with several famous staples of their repertoire already in place: Down on Me, Coo-Coo, and Ball and Chain. Yet, in comparison with their best studio and live recordings from 1967 and 1968, this is a bit limp. Joplin In Concert - Janis Joplin. Her first public performance with them was at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. In June, Joplin was photographed at an outdoor concert in San Francisco that celebrated the summer solstice. The image, which was later published in two books by David Dalton, shows her before she relapsed into drugs. A San Francisco concert from that summer 1966 was recorded and released in the 1984 album Cheaper Thrills. In July, all five bandmates and guitarist James Gurley's wife Nancy moved to a house in Lagunitas, California, where they lived communally. They often partied with the Grateful Dead, who lived less than two miles away. She went to San Francisco in 1963, first living in North Beach and later, Haight-Ashbury, where she begun the drug and alcohol habits that would tragically end her life. During this period, she recorded a session with Jorma Kaukonen that later appeared as the bootleg The Typewriter Tape. In August 1966, the group signed with Mainstream Records and recorded an album. However, it was not released until a year later and in the meantime, with very little reward, they moved with the Grateful Dead to a house in Lagunitas, California. It was there that Joplin relapsed into hard drug use. San Francisco, CA. Panhandle Park. United States. San Rafael, CA. Santa Venetia Armory. Golden Gate Park. Janis lived around the corner, so I'd go over to her house and shoot some pictures, photographer Baron Wolman says. Janis had a dark side and a light side. Piece of My Heart. Photographer Daniel Kramer captures Janis Joplin cutting her 1968 hit Piece of My Heart in New York. Janis wanted a bottle of Southern Comfort, so I accompanied her to a local wine store, then she did a few takes, he recalls. It was an empty studio, there was no stage or audience, no one to work to - yet she was just incredible. Janis Joplin with Clive Davis in 1968. Courtesy of Clive Davis. Janis Joplin, San Francisco and the Summer of Love represent the face, the place and the time of legendary change. Surrounded by all things psychedelic and revolutionary, Joplin was a pivotal player in the Haight-Ashbury scene. Her power still lingers, tripping its way through San Francisco's hip streets. Check out these seven stops for a trip that evokes the best of Joplin and her counterculture vibe. 1353 Grant AveRelated to Janis Joplin - Live In San Francisco 1966/67
