Short intro

Jana Rush received attention for her mind-bending drum acrobatics on last year's MPC 7635 EP under the name Ja Ru, also released by Objects Ltd. Jana started DJiing aged just 10, releasing her first record on Dance Mania back in 1996, but having a hiatus from music between 2000 and 2013. With Pariah she has created an album rooted in Chicago's footwork sound, but with a myriad of influences, such as jungle, acid, soul, jazz and house, developing her sound on from MPC 7635. We kick off with Midline Shift whose breathy, clipped erotic vocals intertwine with a pulsing bass and d. Pariah, Rushs debut LP, arrives over 20 years since her first release, and in that time shes been a firefighter, a CAT scan technician, and a chemical engineer at an oil refinery. Last year, she emerged from her hiatus to release the MPC 7635 EP, which introduced her particular take on footwork. Where Rush differs from most of her peers is the decidedly drowsy nature of her version of footwork. All these songs move at characteristically rapid BPMs, but Rushs production isnt focused so much on speed as it is on atmosphere: A chunk of the tracks on Pariah are closer to very fast ambient than anything approaching dance music. Jana Rush isn't the biggest name in Chicago's footwork scene, but she's been around since its inception. She began DJ'ing on radio station WKKC in the early '90s, when she was only ten years old, with peers including DJ Deeon, DJ Rashad, Gant-Man, and others who would gradually become legends of the Chicago dance music scene. Pariah is her debut full-length, arriving at least a quarter century after she began DJ'ing, and it showcases her singular, highly experimental take on footwork. According to the label, Pariah is rooted in Chicagos footwork sound , but also takes influence from jungle, acid, soul, jazz and house music. Its the first album to be released by Objects Ltd, which was launched by Lara Rix-Martin last year with a focus on music from female-identifying and non-binary producers.
