One of my frequent CD choices is 'John Lewis Volume 2 - The Bridge Game' based on Bach's The Well Tempered Clavier Book 1. Because I really liked this CD, I bought Volume 1 not easy, because it was recorded in 1984 and is no longer being made and it's a big disappointment. Bach's preludes and fugues are beautiful pieces but when seen through the John Lewis sextet lens, they don't work anywhere near as well as The Well Tempered Clavier. It's back to Volume 2 for me. Read more. The Well-Tempered Clavier, BWV 846893, is a collection of two sets of preludes and fugues in all 24 major and minor keys, composed for solo keyboard by Johann Sebastian Bach. In Bach's time Clavier keyboard was a generic name indicating a variety of keyboard instruments, most typically a harpsichord or clavichord but not excluding an organ either. The modern German spelling for the collection is Das wohltemperierte Klavier WTK German pronunciation: . Composed about 20 years apart, the two sets of 24 preludes and Fugues that constitute the two books of Johann Sebastian Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier didnt start off as one huge collection of 48 works in fact, the set of 24 Preludes and Fugues composed in 1742 were not issued as a sequel to the original WTC of 1722. Book I exploits the concept that many more composers from Chopin to moist recently François Dompierre have followed, that of creating a set of works written in every major and minor key. Thus, Mr. Lewis tampers with Bach's proportions from the outset he does not try to make the definitive piano version of the Well-Tempered Clavier. Yet given that Bach was an improviser himself, and that he had no qualms about taking liberties with music from previous centuries, the thought of Bach mixed with Bachian reveries isn't entirely appalling. He acquits himself well in some of the preludes, playing with warmth and clarity and choosing his anachronisms carefully. On his Bach album, Mr. Lewis's genuine affection for the composer doesn't come through his playing. With the ensemble, and sometimes by himself, he makes Bach sound like background music. He is lively even in the slower fugues which has a satisfying effect, unless you tend toward either the Romantic or the purely historical interpretational extremes. Sample the F minor fugue for an idea. Although well-controlled, Jarrett's performances are never inexpressive, and you can listen to the whole set without the feeling of anything being repeated.
