This would have to be my favourite 'Instra:Mental' release to date. On the A -side, we have Leave It All Behind. I swear it took me a long time to get this one out of my head. It's very a catchy and groovy track. Each of those elements have contributed to the incredible success that Instra:mental has enjoyed in 2009. The duo of Alex Green & Damon Kirkham have released a string of beautiful records, culminating in Watching You-a tune that will undoubtedly find its way to a year-end poll or two. The tracks are dubstep or drum & bass often in tempo only, but their debut Apple Pips bow, Leave It All Behind goes even further and disregards those tempos completely, working its magic at a stomping 126 BPM. Much like Watching You, the vocal line is obscured behind a digital mask, but it's content gains resonance as a result. A-side Leave It All Behind could almost be described as deep, electro-influenced house its not a million miles away from Floating Points recent releases, actually, or lighter Drexciya stuff like The Other People Places Lifestyles of The Laptop Cafe. The squelched-out, melodious synths and robo-vocals inevitably remind me also of Darkstars compressed computer-soul its impressive stuff to be sure, but for me the real action is on the B-side.
