The Rake's Progress is an English-language opera in three acts and an epilogue by Igor Stravinsky. The libretto, written by W. Auden and Chester Kallman, is based loosely on the eight paintings and engravings A Rake's Progress 17331735 of William Hogarth, which Stravinsky had seen on 2 May 1947, in a Chicago exhibition. The story concerns the decline and fall of one Tom Rakewell, who deserts Anne Trulove for the delights of London in the company of Nick Shadow, who turns out to be the Devil. Igor Stravinskys opera was inspired by a show of eight William Hogarth paintings from the series of the same name, which were shown in Chicago in 1947. With the help of librettists W. Auden and Chester Kallman, the composer crafted an English-language story about an 18th-century young man who is seduced into a life of dissolution. The opera premiered in September 1951 in Venice, with the composer conducting and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Robert Rounseville starring.
