It is a concept album, which explores various moments in military history, such as the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the American Revolutionary War, and Waterloo. After spending much of their career focusing on dark fantasy and similar themes, The Glorious Burden marks a turn towards reality for Iced Earth. The album specifically covers events in world history, and because history is often defined by conflict and tragedy, the tone remains just as dark, epic, and powerful as previous works from the band. The album goes as far back as the fifth century A. with Atilla the Huns ravages across Europe, and as far forward as the terrorist attacks in America in 2001. Unlike most Iced Earth albums, The Glorious Burden features no fantasy or mythology-based lyrics, and the songs are mostly based on military history. The album was written as a response to the September 11th terrorist attacks in 2001, which are directly addressed in When the Eagle Cries. Matt Barlow recorded the original lead vocal tracks, but when he left the band to become a police officer inspired by the events of 911 the album release was delayed until his parts were replaced by Tim Owens. Barlow's original backing vocals can still be heard on the album. Earth indulge guitarist and principal songwriter Jon Schaeffer's passion - some would say obsession - for history. Though it brings nothing new out of Jon Schaffer and co, it is still a very impressive effort, containing everything an Iced Earth fan could hope for.
