Short intro

If it seems that getting eight CDs for the price of three is too good to be true, you're partially correct. While the packaging on this catalog presentation of Hot Chocolate's first eight recordings for RAK is handsome, it is strangely deceptive. Despite the box with photographic representations of all eight covers, the CDs are actually housed in a single four-disc jewel box. As for the music, there is little to argue with. It's great to see all these albums on CD, but the remastering is mediocre on average, and it's atrociously bad on their most famous track, "You Sexy Thing". A noise reduction filter has been applied with too-high settings, so detail is missing or muted. And of course it's mastered in the modern way: very "loud", with clipping, so the dynamic range is crap. Get it if you must, but I would hold out for something better. But let's be real here. Nothing better is forthcoming, so just go get high-quality LP rips via BitTorrent, from people who actually care.
Remember that remastering is an art! So it is not objective, depends on personal taste. You say that the Abbey Road remaster sounds completely dull & compressed. Trust me, thats how the LP sounded. David Bowie made 4 remasters of his Ziggy Stardust and yet not fully pleased so personally I am glad when a remaster sound exactly as the original master tape and repeat when the remaster comes from the original tapes..
Hi, I don't have the original LP but some 12" (but not this track). But I don't understand why I should compare this mastering against a vinyl? I compare these two and the better wins (knock-out basis). The 1st track on my video comparsion (from Abbey Road) sounds completely dull & compressed. Try to play it loud in a club for 2000 people. It sounds horrible and produces no fun (I tested it). It's not because of "depends on original production". The original production has more dynamic which is clearly reduced which shouldn't be done by professionals.I'm sure the 2nd has the natural noise (and maybe more because of the copy of the analog master tape for the Austrian record company back in the time) - and more room (dynamic). I definitely prefer this for playing in the club. Of course - the noise could be a little bit removed if possible but I'm sure it's not easy to avoid removal of the highs. (Read Steve Hoffman forum or interviews - I would have posted a link for you but the link doesn't exist anymore regarding "noise").After my holiday I will compare 2-3 other tracks - incl. from my original vinyls.
well to my ear the abbey road remastering is superior to the orher track in comparison (very equalized) , originally this is a lo-fi production so you should make the same comparison with an LP press of that period. if you have time make this and post it, i would be glad to hear it.
NOTE: This should be a reply to the reply by "tasper72" - I don't know why it is after "mjb" now! I can't delete or remove it.Sorry, the re-mastering is horrible - please see & listen this video comparsion. For more info please see my reply on mjb comment above.
Correct. The re-mastering is horrible - please see & listen this video comparsion. Track 1 is this "remastering" - Track 2 is from a CD compilation from Austria (1998) - not on discogs.com. ;) ... The mouse cursor moves up and down and shows you which track is playing. Played on a Xone-95 mixer, set the channels to the same "loudness" (mid/highs/low all in the middle) and moved between left/right with fader. And this is remastering quality by Abbey Road Studios ??? I hope anyone hears the nice sound on track 2 (the Austrian compilation).
I wonder in which devices you are listening these discs. The remastering is excellent and the sound faithfull. Some tracks are indeed dull but that depends on original production. Ian Jones is a serious professional and one of few technicians that were allowed to put hands on the master tapes of Maria Callas and Von Karajan. That says all.
