Short intro

Herbert von Karajans first performance with the Berliner Philharmoniker in April 1938 was a sensation and aroused the jealousy of principal conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler, who from then on considered the young star his rival. Furtwängler died in 1954, and the direction of an America tour the year thereafter that had already been planned devolved to Karajan. After successful completion of the tour, Karajan was appointed principal conductor in 1956. It was the beginning of a new era. Herbert von Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker were considered a dream team. But the later years of their working together were overshadowed by conflicts and estrangement. In his pursuit of an almost effortless legato sound of otherworldly beauty, he stands for unique perfection. Precisely at the time these films were made, there was between Herbert von Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker an unparalleled give and take. The orchestra sublimely realized the vision of its chief who in turn was inspired by the sonic potential of his musicians. Generally speaking, the BPO is at its very best here under Karajan - the brass quite literally blows every other orchestra away, and the strings are volcanic in their intensity. Percussion is another highlight, with some very nice tympani and tambourine work. Anyway, in addition to the music, there is a 1 hour Karajan documentary. It's just OK. It's a bit woo and laudatory, and there are significant stretches where nothing particularly interesting is said.
