North on South St. is a hip-hop influenced album by Herb Alpert released in 1991 and his last vinyl release on A&M Records before he released Midnight Sun available on CD and cassette only in 1992. The album was a commercial success and produced two singles: Jump Street and North on South St. Both of the singles had a video, yet North on South St. got a bit of popularity because the video was featured on Beavis and Butt-head several years later. There was a promotional plastic compass that was. Clearly Alpert's early jazz leanings were beckoning more strongly, and his Miles Davis-like musings over the dance tumult actually anticipated the acid-jazz movement later in the decade, making this a historically important record. Yet there is something melancholy about Alpert's playing on this album, like a lonely figure from the past looking in on a party from an outside window on the street, genuinely wanting to join in but unable to totally connect. Still, for someone of Alpert's age 56 at the time of release, it is amazing that he was willing and able to stay in touch wi. Album 1991 10 Songs.
