In the mid-'80s Fiol recorded on his own Corazon label some of the most consistently elegant recordings in Cuban-tipico vein. As this British compilation from Corazon shows, he's a terrific singer, light and throwaway for a sonero. And his band's mix of classic elements with versatile tenor sax punctuations works a treat. Fiol was born on January 16, 1947, in New York City to an Italian-American mother and a Puerto Rican father. His style could best be characterized as tipico, because throughout his career he always stuck relatively close to the Cuban son, the root of the music now called salsa.
