VIIb1, by Joseph Haydn was composed around 1761-65 for longtime friend Joseph Franz Weigl, then the principal cellist of Prince Nicolaus's Esterházy Orchestra. The work was presumed lost until 1961, when musicologist Oldřich Pulkert discovered a copy of the score at the Prague National Museum. Though some doubts have been raised about the authenticity of the work, most experts believe that Haydn did compose this concerto. Mstislav Rostropovich - Haydn: Cello Concertos. I was surprised to discover from the accompanying booklet that the manuscript turned up quite late in the 20th century and the piece did not receive its premiere given by Rostropovich until 1962. The two cadenzas for this performance, and on this recording, were specially written by Benjamin Britten, a close friend of Rostropovich. I was not disappointed, and the virtuosity of his performance particularly evident in the third movement of the 1st concerto. Read more
