Short intro
Playin' in the Yard is a live album by jazz keyboardist Hampton Hawes recorded at the 1973 Montreux Jazz Festival for the Prestige label. Although well-played, little memorable occurs, and Hawes never did sound as distinctive on keyboards as he did on acoustic piano. According to Scott Yanow: Hampton Hawes plays the electric piano like no ones business when it. This live LP which has not yet been reissued on CD mostly features Hampton Hawes on electric piano, performing at the 1973 Montreux Jazz Festival in a trio with electric bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Kenny Clarke. Hawes interprets three of his originals, Sonny Rollins' catchy Playin' in the Yard, and Stella by Starlight. Hampton Barnett Hawes, Jr. November 13, 1928 May 22, 1977 was an American jazz pianist. He was the author of the memoir Raise Up Off Me, which won the Deems-Taylor Award for music writing in 1975. Hampton Hawes was born on November 13, 1928, in Los Angeles, California. His father, Hampton Hawes, Sr. was minister of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles. His mother, the former Gertrude Holman, was Westminster's church pianist. Hawes' first experience with the piano was as a toddler. Two early '70s Hampton Hawes albums - Playin' in the Yard and Northern Windows - under one roof. Yard captures Hawes on electric keyboards, live in Montreux very tasty, while Windows backs his lean, propulsive acoustic piano style with a glossy jazz-funk outfit. Grooves galore, though Hawes' earlier albums display his true pianio genius. Nick Dedina. About This Album. Playin' In The Yard. Songs in album Hampton Hawes - The Hampton Hawes Memorial Album 1956.
