Short intro
Symphony No. 1 in D major by Gustav Mahler was mainly composed between late 1887 and March 1888, though it incorporates music Mahler had composed for previous works. It was composed while Mahler was second conductor at the Leipzig Opera, Germany. Although in his letters Mahler almost always referred to the work as a symphony, the first two performances described it as a symphonic poem and as a tone poem in symphonic form respectively. The work was premièred at the Vigadó Concert Hall, Budapest, in. The Symphony No. 1, Titan, is considered by many to be Gustav Mahler's most accessible work, and this Leonard Bernstein recording is listed at near the top of recommended versions. Being a huge Bernstein AND Mahler fan, and having never heard this particular recording, I decided to give the disc a spin. Tchaikovsky's last 3 symphonies bear this out better than anything else he did at this time. But that often might not help the composer LB was most linked to, Mahler. In this recording of the Titan symphony, LB tends to bounce from one extreme to the next, especially in the 2 middle movements, which I cannot say I like here.
