Perhaps the highlight is the Quartet for four cellos of 1963, where the cellos create dissonant, wall-like clusters of sound, but all four works are idiomatic pieces that deserve a permanent place in the chamber repertory. With this release, maybe that's just what they'll get. Quartet For 4 Cellos: I. Dotted Quarter Note 42. Quartet For 4 Cellos: II. Quarter Note 50. Performed live by KINETIC in May 2016 at Midtown Arts & Theater Center Houston MATCH. Violinists: MuChen Hsieh Mark Chien Natalie LIn Dian for 4 Cellos Grazyna Bacewicz. dotted quarter note 42 - Poco più mosso - Poco meno mosso - Più mosso - Sostenuto - Più mosso. The two piano quintets and two unorthodox quartets heard here - one for four violins, one for four cellos - have not been so widely heard, but they're well worth your time, as are the performances here by the Silesian Quartet and friends are ideal. Chandos' engineering work at the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music concert hall in Katowice catches all the considerable detail from the players. For those invigorated by the Silesian Quartets complete quartet set, heres an exciting new addition: two piano quintets. They are works of real substance and originality. The First 1952 is an assured achievement with a powerful identity. In this, and the Second Quintet, pianist Wojciech Switałas playing is spirited and incisive. By 1965, Bacewicz was emboldened to enter the avant garde, and her Second Quintet is confrontational and virtuosic. The Silesians tap in to its nervous energy. The 1963 cello quartet is a radical exploration of extended sonorities, all dreamed up without the advantages of IRCAM. The four works brought together here two unusual quartet formations and two piano quintets form an integral part of the central, chamber music strand in Bacewicz's output. With the Quartet for 4 Cellos, written in 1964, Bacewicz moves to a much more experimental, uncompromisingly modern sound. The Silesian Quartet, their accomplished Friends and Chandos are certainly doing their part to help to build up her reputation to something more like what her talents deserve.
