Skeletons from the Closet: The Best of Grateful Dead is the first compilation album from rock band the Grateful Dead. It was originally released in February 1974. As with other such packages, the album was a way for Warner Bros. Records to capitalize on the Dead's back catalog, after the band had left the label. It was followed three years later by a second compilation, What a Long Strange Trip It's Been. Skeletons from the Closet has been long-lived as a Grateful Dead primer, though it was superseded by The Very Best of the Grateful Dead in 2003. Fans of the band's live show have noted that Skeletons only contains two live tracks from a band whose live shows are its strongest suit. Still, Skeletons remains a good introduction to the band's early - and arguably best - work, and is also a great disc for the casual fan. The Dead pretend theyre a singles band in this collection of their best-known shorter tracks. The cumulative results are distinguished, not by profundity or virtuosity, but by a characteristic pleasantness. The album boasts attractive melodies and supple rhythmic patterns. But in isolating their persistent flaws as well as occasional successes, Skeletons from the Closet suggests that the Grateful Dead may never have been an exceptional recording group. The Grateful Dead - Mexicali Blues. I bought my first copy of this album on cassette way back in the early 80s. I've always enjoyed the mix of songs on it, and the sequencing. I agree with some of the other reviewers that this album does go well with the double album What A Long Strange Trip It's Been, only one song is on both albums Truckin'. It's not really a greatest hits album, Truckin' was pretty much their only early radio hit. Whilst I much prefer the Dead's live offerings, this is a good cheap way to taste their studio output.
