Shinin' On is the eighth studio album by American rock band Grand Funk Railroad. The album was released in March 1974, by Capitol Records. Although not as successful as its predecessor, We're an American Band 1973, it peaked at 5 in the US and was certified gold, and its first single, a cover of The Loco-Motion topped the U. The original cover was done in bi-visual 3-D and included the required blue and red lensed glasses to view it. A Quadraphonic mix of the album was available in the. By May, Shinin On was spending two non-consecutive weeks at No. 5 on the Billboard album chart, just as The Loco-motion hit the singles summit. By the time the LP was out, the band were already on an extensive US tour. It soon became their tenth to go gold in a row, in a tally of six gold, four platinum and two double platinum LPs. The bands European success on record was somewhat limited, certainly by comparison to their superstar status back home in the first half of the 1970s. Shinin' On's best songs are the ones that became its single releases: the title track infuses its hard-driving, spacy rock groove with some surprisingly ethereal vocal harmonies and the cover of The Loco Motion turns this dance classic on its ear with a stomping beat and a screeching guitar lead from Mark Farner.
