Vanier served in the Canadian Army during the First World War and lost a leg on the battlefields. He remained in the military and commanded troops on the home front during World War II. He was a popular Governor General who was met with hostility by Quebec separatists. Vanier was bilingual English-French. When he took Office he insisted on bilingual signage at the main gates and that a chapel for offering Mass be constructed on the property. Jean Vanier was educated in England and Canada, entered the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, England in 1942. He went to sea in 1945 in the Royal Navy and in 1947 transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy. He resigned from the Royal Canadian Navy in 1950 while serving . He then went to France to work in a students' community outside of Paris. He studied philosophy and theology and Jean Vanier was educated in England and Canada, entered the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, England in 1942. He went to sea in 1945 in the Royal Navy and in 1947 transferred to the Royal Canadian. GEORGES PHILIAS VANIER, DISTINGUISHED SOLDIER AND DIPLOMAT, HAS A unique place in the hearts of his countrymen. As governor-general, he became a symbol of their own strength and integrity. When he died, on 5 March I 967, they mourned for him as men had mourned at the passing of Winston Churchill. These two great men were very different, the one British, the other al-together Canadian. But each will live on as a leader of thought while the story of his life and the causes for which he strove will be his enduring memorial.
