One thing that refreshingly distinguishes electropop duo Goldfrapp from most musical acts is that they never make the same album back-to-back. Since their lush and elegant 2000 debut, Felt Mountain, each subsequent Goldfrapp record appears to be a reaction to the previous one. Silver Eyes more esoteric numbers are even more impressive. (By 'her' I do include Will Gregory, but I guess the band name designates a kind of Alison ownership? So, I write the below with 'her' pronoun and the understanding that Will is there . . .).

My favourite Goldfrapp album has generally been Felt Mountain, for some of its iconic tunes. But when I am listening to the other albums I easily change my mind. It's wonderful following her progress. She has mastered a strong range in pop and seemingly doesn't tire. Each album has a different character; veering from punchy disco to songs with a purer beauty and always retaining a keen awareness of electronica. Then suddenly with Tales of Us, she jumped off! Took a bit of a detour and told a personal tale through different biographies - the result is a treasure. In the world of corporate tyranny over music, it's awesome to see (hear) an artist expressively exploring.

Silver Eye is probably the best album in terms of balancing her pop range. The clear vinyl pressing is beautiful to listen to. However, it confounds me that some of the singles aren't remixed more and available as CDs (I only listen to tangible CD / vinyl). Goldfrapp's sound being firmly based in electronica it is a match made in heaven for remixes (as too are her friends, Depeche Mode – kings of the remix). So, now with the deluxe edition CD we finally have some remixes; and alot of them - this is great value.

Everybody is expectedly talking about the duet with Dave Gahan: it is great to hear them sing together and the Ocean song is the perfect framework for them both. Dave Gahan’s soulful voice holds a lot of personal history, despite a bumpy road, he's an amazing survivor. Though Martin Gore continues to write beautiful songs, sometimes the DM ‘sound’ doesn't manage to keep up with Gahan and Gore. Dave Gahan could be outgrowing Depeche Mode. I hope I’m wrong and if I’m right he better take Martin with him. [Sorry - shouldn't be writing about DM!]

For me, the brightest song on the Silver Tree remix album is Everything Is Never Enough, Video Mix. I love the chirpy synthesizer tune in the background of this song. It deserves to be a seven minute mix. Goldfrapp, Alison and Will, deserve a much bigger audience. This is great stuff.
