About Turandot. Puccinis last and grandest opera was adapted from Carlo Gozzis similarly titled 18th-century play, though its story can be traced to a 12th-century Persian epic poem by Nizami. Set in ancient China, it concerns an exiled prince who is lovestruck by the sight of the emperors daughter and vows to marry her, despite her policy of executing all suitors who fail to answer three riddles she poses. The composer was given a music box by Italian diplomat Baron Fassini Camossi that played Chinese melodies, and used some of the musical material in the opera. Puccini began work on the.
