Near the end of his life, Giacinto Scelsi wished to document what he considered definitive interpretations by the musicians with whom he worked closely (Michiko Hirayama, The Arditti String Quartet, and Frances-Marie Uitti), and he considered this recording of the Trilogy, exemplary in style, sound and spirit. He then dedicated all of his solo works for cello to Frances-Marie Uitti.

Giacinto Scelsi, Count of Ayala Valva 8 January 1905 9 August 1988, was an Italian composer who also wrote surrealist poetry in French. He is best known for writing music based around only one pitch, altered in all manners through microtonal oscillations, harmonic allusions, and changes in timbre and dynamics, as paradigmatically exemplified in his revolutionary Quattro pezzi su una nota sola Four Pieces on a single note, 1959. Cellist Frances-Marie Uitti formed both professional and personal ties with composer and mystic Giacinto Scelsi, and as a student of his in yoga and metaphysics, she became a spiritual disciple as well. It is natural, then, that she would champion his rarefied and esoteric music, especially his work for solo cello, Trilogy - The Three Ages of Man 1956-1965, which he dedicated to her. On this 2006 ECM New Series CD, Uitti serves up compelling performances of the microtonal Ygghur 1961 - the third section from the Trilogy - and the modal Ave Maria and Alleluj.
