"Second work, after "Shallafrost Course And Other Tales" from 2014, for this duo by Emanuele Lago, already known to the sound chronicles for the projects Black Mountain Chronicles and Immortal Agony, and the American Doyle Finley, better known in the Invercauld robes.
"Ancient Spirits Of The Fen" has the features of a large suite divided into 15 passages,
the titles of which go to make up a virtual fantastic journey together with imaginary names and places. The sounds come to life by electronic processing often multilayered, divided among drones, noises and vague litanies.
Audio lines never follow a defined logic, aiming to create atmospheres in which to move
grim and undefined sensations into a constant evocation of a fantasy style.
On the stylistical plane they take the moves from the post-industrial canons with some more blatantly "death" stakes, but always keeping a personal touch both compositionally and in visionary background.
If the disk layout is decidedly controlled in its geographical and emotional stages,
in detail a more improvised cut emerges, which avoids the classic industrial-electronics insistencey, to favor an absolutely not rigid playthrough, almost modeled on oneiric experiences barely touched by small loops.
Compared to the debut album, we can see the greater insistence of leaden tones:

New chapter of Ghastly Marshes , conspicuous collaboration between Emanuele Lago from Veneto, already a veteran of the experimental Italian scene, who has been able, in the years, to build a sort of niche, & the American Doyle Finley.
I already had got occasion to talk, previously, on Ver Sacrum, about the previous chapter "Shallafrost Course And Other Tales". Now, for this new Ancient Spirits Of The Fen, I can't but confirm substantially what said before: the ambiences are always very obscure and cryptical, very near, like general atmosphere, to dark ambient and to noise, even though we must point out that the used instruments don't comprehend synths but there is a sostantial concentration on research and manipulation of the sounds: there isn't space for the light in the sound-universe of Ghastly Marshes.
Who had loved the Cold Meat Industry schoold and “historical” names of the dark-ambient genre like Lustmord & Raison D’Etre, will not find hard to be at their own good feelings in this matter as like in other similar projects by the same Lago, like Black Mountains Chronicles & Immortal Agony.
In this occasion there seems not to be any concept, an aspect, this, which maybe takes out a bit of fascination respect to Shallafrost Course And Other Tales, an album, this one, ncentrated on imaginary locations to which a gloomy horror halo was not foreign.
Ancient Spirits Of The Fen was composed by mail between Lago e Doyle Finley: pratically, the 2 exchanged the bases and then re-touched the material............."
